Margaret,
Here is the promised post of places to go in Montreal.
CLUBS:
Jet: (Ste Catherine & St. Timothe) It's an okay club, they play hip hop & R&B music and cover is $10. see if you can pick up any
across the street from Jet is Groove Society and it plays techno/house stuff
Orchid:(Prince Arthur & St. Laurent) really nice club, hip-hop & R&B, I think you'll have a lot of fun here, cover: $10
la BOUM: La Boum is a really big club and most people have quite a bit of fun here. Stay close, you might get lost! (I did, it was scary) Oooh, another plus, they have really comfy armchairs! (Though you're not really going to sit... hehe) cover: $10
Ganeche (i'm not sure if the spelling is correct) is on St. Denis, cover is $3 and they play all sorts of funky music. The other places have dress codes but Ganeche is pretty casual. You have to beware of the old fat men though. Whereas at the other clubs, you have to beware of skinny young(sometimes ugly) men. Go with other people and I'm sure you'll have a good time!
Cafe Campus lots of people really like this club, I can't really define what kinda music they play. Tuesdays are 80s night so if you want to go, prepare to get there by 9pm or else you'll be in line for hours. I'm not a big fan of this place but it attracts a lot of tourists. I think it might be on a website's "Must-See of Montreal" list.
If you like salsa, check out Salsatheque on Peel and Rene-Levesque. You'll find lots of really good dancers here and uhh... also creepy men. I guess creepy men is the theme here. Stick to your friends and you shouldn't really have too much of problem.
BARS
I'm not really going to go into bars cuz there's millions of them. Some notable ones, Peel Pub (Peel & Ste Catherine), McKibbons, Hurley's, the Queen Elizabeth, Cheers (on McKay, Wedn is lady's night), Brutopia (they brew their own beer, try the Raspberry Blond, also, Monday is Trivia Night ) Take a stroll down Crescent St. Most of the bars on this strip are pretty good.
Places to go (some of them I haven't visited) that are very touristy: the Old Port, Prince Arthur St. east of St. Laurent (it's cobbled-stoned, very European), olympic stadium, botanical gardens (they might have some cool exhibits there). If you like baseball, check out an expos game! hehe.
I dunno what else to suggest... ask me and I'll try to light your way.
